IN LOVING MEMORY OF "POOH"
August 14th, 2011

It seems like only yesterday when Pooh was picked up at HEART in May of
1992. We waited for almost a year for that perfect "little red boy"
who's litter was found on a farm in Eden.
He found my size eleven sneaker a most comfortable sleeping spot for the
short time that he was tiny, then taking over the entire house as "his"
sleeping spot. As the most sociable cat ever, he would bolt to the front
door from any of three floors when the door chime rang, anxious to be
the first to greet visitors. Even in his waning days, any sound
resembling a door chime would awaken him and pique his interest. Pooh
had to be right in the middle of any parties or gatherings. His
sociability was only extended to humans, though. Pooh was quite the
"enforcer" when it came to his three yard "territory." He was the boss
of his land for two decades, although the last few years of skirmishes
were more vocal than anything else.
He had the most fulfilled life a cat could ever have and gave us almost
twenty years of unconditional love and devotion. We miss our Pooh so
much..........

IN LOVING MEMORY OF "NICHOLAS"
Nicholas was a HEART dog. He took went to the vet today (12/27/10) where it was discovered he had untreatable kidney cancer. The hearbreaking decision was made to put Nicholas to rest. His loving foster mom was with him. As rescuers we have to come to terms with the fact that we can't save them all. We do the best we can. However, there are those that we thought we had saved, but then events took a tragic turn and we were unable to give them the life we wanted for them.
We fell in love Nicholas. He was very brave. He suffered before he came to HEART but his last few weeks were filled with warmth and love. He passed on knowing he had lots of new friends who loved him very much. Even if that’s all we could do, we still made a difference in the life of this precious dog. Your generous donations to help Nicholas will be used to pay his veterinary bills and to establish the "Nicholas Fund" in his memory. The Nicholas Fund will be used to help future HEART dogs that come to us suffering from abuse and neglect.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF "PETEY"
Petey recently passed away at age 17 in the loving presence of his family.
He is now in heaven with his Uncle Ernie, and smiling down upon
Tamiko, Will, Gaby, and Alex Ortega.

CHELSEA ~ SG-568 (died July 10, 2010)
Chelsea came to HEART as an emergency call. She showed up at a concerned citizen’s home begging for food and with a wound on her neck. HEART rushed her to Boston Valley Animal Hospital. While Dr. MaryLee was cleaning the wound on Chelsea's neck she found a tumor with cancer cells.

We think Chelsea once had a home. She once belonged to someone. But when she needed medical attention she was tossed out to fend for herself. We were heartbroken when we heard Chelsea’s cancer diagnosis. The prognosis was not good, but HEART decided we would make the remainder of her life a happy one. She was placed in a HEART foster home and seemed to be doing well, her foster family helping her to forget all the bad things that had marked her past.

Sadly, events suddenly took a tragic turn and Chelsea died in her foster home. She was only with us a short time but they were probably the happiest days of her life. We were unable to give Chelsea the life we wanted for her but she passed on knowing that she was loved. Even if that’s all we could do, we still made a difference in the life of this precious girl.



"HUNTER" March 26, 2010

Today I held my sweet boy in my arms while he was euthanized -
his battle with cancer was finally over. I remember the day I brought you home from HEART in 2002. I can still feel the soft velvet of your paw, the tickle of whiskers, that warm rasp of tongue as you decided I needed a bath. I miss the gentle rumble of your purr, the comfort of snuggle times, your gentle spirit.
I remember how much you loved tummy rubs and special occasion treats.
You never met a cat bed you didn't like and long naps were your idea of heaven.
I tell myself that you're okay. The others are there with you.
Is Max o.k.? You remember how much he loved to cuddle with you. It's never easy to say good-bye...but now my boys are together again.

"MAX"
Your favorite chair is vacant now...
No eager purrs to greet me.
No softly padded paws to run
Ecstatically to meet me.
No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it's time for feeding.
I've put away your bowl, and all
The things you won't be needing;
But I will miss you little friend,
For I could never measure
The happiness you brought me,
The comfort and the pleasure.
And since God put you here to share
In earthly joy and sorrow;
I'm sure there'll be a place for you
In Heaven's bright tomorrow...

"WILBUR"
Wilbur felt his job was to be a back up alarm clock even if the alarm wasn't set. His mom never got to sleep late even on weekends. If a gentle paw to the face didn't rouse her, then it was on to the feet attack. Only a mere 3 years old, cancer took Wilbur on October 16, 2009. His mom says she was the lucky one who was given a chance to open her heart to a cat like Wilbur. We take great comfort in knowing that in the last months of his life, Wilbur was well cared for and greatly loved.

"PJ (PONGO JAKE)"
PJ came to HEART as a senior cat. Having lived most of his life as a friendly stray in a feral colony he wanted some "one-on-one love" and a warm bed. PJ was placed in a HEART foster home where his foster mom cared for and comforted him in his last months.

A purr machine for anyone who would hold him, PJ will be missed. He died on September 21, 2009 after a year and a half in his foster home.

RACHEL LYNNE EUGENIA

Rachel Lynne Eugenia came to HEART in April 2007. At that time she was estimated to be about 14 years old. In August it was discovered she had lymphomic leukemia, a cancer of the blood. This feisty girl was a mere four pounds but she was a trooper - even with all the challenges this disease gave her. She loved to jump on the bed to sit with her foster mom and the other cats in her foster home. Eventually the illness took its toll and Rachel Lynne died on May 30, 2008. We take great comfort in knowing that in the last months of her life, she was well cared for, happy, and greatly loved by the HEART volunteer who cared for her. It hurts so much to lose one of our rescued animals, no matter how little or much time we have with them. Rachel Lynne’s bravery in the face of her challenges reminds us why we do what we do. Have fun at the Rainbow Bridge, sweet Rachel Lynne, we'll not forget you.
